Gawler Ambulance Station
Gawler Ambulance Station has been developed as a contemporary, purpose-built emergency services facility tailored to the needs of a growing regional community. The project supports the expansion of emergency healthcare provision in regional South Australia, including the delivery of a permanent 24-hour operational presence and increased regional transfer capability.
Located at the northern perimeter of Gawler, the station occupies a highly strategic site that enhances response efficiency while retaining strong connections to the regional road network. The facility is planned to support two operational crews, with secure garaging for up to five emergency vehicles and provision for future growth. Early planning focused on operational clarity, the separation of vehicular movements, and safe, legible access for staff and service operations.
The architectural approach is defined by a restrained and durable expression. Straightforward built forms, robust low-maintenance materials, and considered roof profiles underpin a design intended for longevity and adaptability. The building is configured to allow future expansion of vehicle storage, accommodation, and support areas, and incorporates allowances for future fleet electrification to reduce disruption and retrofit costs.
Internally, the spatial arrangement has been carefully developed in collaboration with SAAS to respond to the operational patterns of a regional ambulance station. Training and meeting areas are located to allow managed public access, while operational workspaces, rest areas, and crew amenities are organised to support readiness, recovery, and staff wellbeing. All regularly occupied spaces are provided with access to natural light and external outlooks.
Sustainability principles are integrated throughout the project, including full electrification, rooftop solar generation, rainwater capture, a high-performance building envelope, and the use of locally sourced, low-VOC materials. Landscape works contribute to both site amenity and security, with native planting used to define and buffer the site edges.
The Gawler Ambulance Station provides a resilient and adaptable working environment that supports efficient operations, staff wellbeing, and long-term service delivery. The project represents a meaningful investment in regional health infrastructure and reinforces SAAS’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality emergency care to the Gawler community and the broader northern region.
