Adelaide Sexual Health Centre
The Adelaide Sexual Health Centre (ASHC) is a statewide service providing diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and blood-borne viruses. Managed by the Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN), ASHC now operates from a purpose-built facility at 260 Currie Street, offering improved accessibility near the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Delivering a modern, functional clinic within an existing building required a thoughtful design approach. Key challenges included integrating extensive plumbing infrastructure and optimizing structural elements for specialized medical facilities. The layout was tightly planned to accommodate consultation rooms and support spaces efficiently. To enhance flow, we introduced subtly curved corridor corners, creating a smooth, intuitive movement through the space.
With limited natural light—south-facing windows, a partially open northern façade, and minimal eastern openings—light-coloured surfaces and extensive glazing are used to create a sense of openness. Recognizing ASHC’s diverse clientele, the design solution moved away from a sterile clinical aesthetic, incorporating timber for warmth and colour for wayfinding and visual interest.
The result is a contemporary healthcare environment that balances functionality with a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere, supporting ASHC in delivering essential services to the South Australian community.
