Gepps Cross Police Complex
The new home for South Australia Police’s Mounted Operations Unit (MOU) and Dog Operations Unit (DOU) was delivered to enable the development of Adelaide’s new Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Relocating from the historic Thebarton Barracks, their home for over a century, this once-in-a-generation project brings both units into purpose-built, contemporary facilities designed for people, animals, and performance.
Delivered in partnership with Luke Jones Architects, the equestrian facilities accommodate SAPOL’s 32 Police Greys, supported by highly considered training and operational infrastructure. New stables and mounting facilities, a covered 70m x 35m arena, integrated feed and hay storage, and generous outdoor paddocking prioritise horse welfare while improving the efficiency and safety of daily operations for staff.
Greenway led the design of the Dog Operations Unit facilities, including kennelling, specialised training and simulation environments, agility spaces, and dedicated veterinary and welfare areas.
A shared Combined Operations facility unites MOU and DOU for the first time, providing flexible workplaces, training rooms, conferencing, and amenities. Previously operating in substandard conditions, staff now benefit from adaptable, contemporary environments that support evolving operational needs.
Set within northern parklands, the Gepps Cross Police Complex integrates sustainable infrastructure, including a 200kW solar array and 350,000L of harvested water for animal care and site irrigation. The result is a future-focused facility that supports the ongoing work of these specialised SAPOL units.
