Mount Barker Ambulance Station

Client Dept. for Infrastructure and Transport, SA Ambulance Service and SA Health Location Mount Barker Value $8.5M Completion 2024

The rapid growth of Mount Barker has intensified demand for essential health services, prompting the delivery of a new, purpose-built Ambulance Station designed to support the region now and into the future. The building is expressed as a series of bold yet restrained forms, grounded in durable materials and firmly connected to its context. A locally sourced bluestone wall addressing Bald Hills Road anchors the project to place, while the entry gate subtly references the area’s Indigenous heritage, acknowledging the cultural significance of nearby Mount Barker Summit.

Developed in close consultation with the SA Ambulance Service, the station provides a contemporary, fit-for-purpose facility that prioritises operational efficiency, fast response times, and effective internal workflows. At the same time, the design recognises the need for moments of calm and recovery, offering spaces that support staff wellbeing when operational pressures allow.

Sustainability is been integral to the project. Using SA Health’s in-house green rating tool, the building comfortably achieves a 5-star outcome, aligning with Greenway’s commitment to natural light, passive design principles, and energy-efficient outcomes.

The rural setting informed both form and materiality. The architecture references agricultural structures in its simple, functional massing, while the material palette draws on the stone and robust finishes characteristic of earlier local buildings. Accommodation is provided for up to three operational crews, alongside garaging for six emergency vehicles, supporting SA Health’s broader strategic objectives of strengthening primary and emergency care to the region.

The sloping site, overlooking the Laratinga Wetlands, was been carefully managed to provide level operational access while accommodating a natural fall of approximately 5.5 metres. Orientation ensures that key staff spaces benefit from northern light, enhancing comfort and reducing energy demand.

Internally, a calm and composed palette of soft, natural tones creates a restorative environment. Together, these elements deliver a facility that enables the SA Ambulance Service to focus on its core purpose: caring for the Mount Barker community and surrounding district.
