Conyngham Street Depot
The importance of “place” is evidenced in the Conyngham Street Depot. Built on the site of the existing Depot, this project saw a rationalisation and consolidation of Council maintenance requirements, freeing up a large portion of the site to create a facility for the community.
The site now includes the Depot, a Plant Nursery, Community Gardens and the “Men’s Shed”. Many a conversation was had with Council and the community, especially the users of the “Men’s Shed” to ensure that everyone’s needs were met, ownership of the project maintained and that every voice was heard.
Care was taken in the detailing of the structure and the facility’s materiality to create an engaging and welcoming, modern facility, including robust timber and steel detailing, warm plywood linings and recycled bricks used in walling.
The project won the “Best Public Works, $2-5M” in the 2020 IPWEA Awards.
It’s a project that will continue to support its community long into the future.
